The term “Moses Miracle” is most commonly known as the splitting of the Red Sea. In Korea, the Moses Miracle also refers to a phenomenon where all cars in a road move out of the way to create a pathway for emergency vehicles, such as ambulances and firetrucks. This is something that should be happening on a daily basis. It a natural action that should be done without thinking twice. However, it is a slightly different situation in Korea. This phenomenon is actually quite rare in this country. Many fine drivers completely ignore the desperate sirens ringing behind them, being selfish and lazy.
Anyone using an ambulance is obviously someone in an urgent situation. For these people, time is very important. If these people do not get to a hospital in time, they face consequences. Even a small delay in arrival may result in a body part having to be removed permanently, or may even cost their life. One turn of a steering wheel may be the deciding factor of someone’s life. In Korea, only 12.3% of emergency patients get to a hospital in time. Because of ignorant, selfish drivers, so many patients have to face consequences that they could have easily avoided. Ambulances are not the only vehicles drivers should make way for. Making way for fire trucks is also very vital, as all fire trucks must get to fires as fast as they can in order to countless lives and property. One minute of delay may result in a potential survivor to choke and die in the flames. We, students must realize the importance of making way for emergency vehicles. In the future, when we become drivers, we must show better respect towards the urgent emergency vehicles. When we hear a siren behind us, without any law, without any thinking, our hands must be on the steering wheel, maneuvering our automobiles to side to create the Moses Miracle. We hope that one day, the phenomenon of the splitting of cars would no longer be called a miracle, but rather a common sight. Doctor Kim Kyu Seok has one final message to say to all the current and future drivers of South Korea. “When you hear a siren blaring behind your car, please willingly make way, thinking that the emergency vehicle behind you is urgently on its way to save a life of your loving family member.” |
