Justin Chang (8) is a mischievous and extroverted eighth grader who enjoys engaging in recreational activities outside of school. However, when he is alone, Justin finds pleasure in playing the clarinet. According to Justin, though he initially chose the clarinet solely for the purpose of joining the middle school band, he has grown increasingly attached to it.
“I started playing [the clarinet] because I thought it’d look really cool,” Justin said. “Now [I have been] playing [the clarinet] for almost four years now. Unlike other people, I actually do enjoy [playing the clarinet]. I see band class as an opportunity to learn from the conductor and my friends.”
According to Timonthy Kim (8), fellow clarinet player, Justin’s skill and talent may be attributed to his positive approach and willingness to practice outside of school.
“His hand technique is good and it enables us to reach our maximum playing speed in more difficult pieces,” Timothy said. “In my opinion, he’s one of the best clarinet players in school.”
Justin hopes to pursue his passion in the long run. He is a member of the Seoul Winds Orchestra, and hopes to join High School Orchestra next year when he is a freshman.
“I know that there are so many talented high schoolers that I’m going to have to compete against next year but I hope I stand a chance,” Justin said.
