Feet move quickly around the court as the boys move rapidly to receive a pass. Ryan Jang (8) fakes then passes the basketball to Mark Lee (8) who has managed to swiftly free himself of his defender and score a goal. To celebrate the success, the whole team exchanges high fives and encouragement.
As a member of Bally Crossover, a team that meets two times a week, Ryan partakes in an intensive ninety minute basketball practice session. He has been playing basketball since he was in the sixth grade and has developed a keen interest in the sport.
“I play basketball because it is engaging and helps you make friends.” Ryan said. “The satisfaction of scoring a point is good, especially when it’s a point that changes the game. But points in basketball are things that just happen and appear in every game so I don’t worry about it and instead I keep trying to get more points.”
Ryan not only enjoys the experience of winning but also values teamwork. At Bally Crossover, the players have established closer bonds through their teamwork. According to Timothy Kim (8), one of Ryan’s close friends, Ryan is a true asset to the Crossover basketball team and he always tries his best, despite difficult circumstances.
From practicing often and playing at large basketball tournaments, Ryan was injured several times. He hurt his ankle two times and fingers more than eight times. However, despite these incidents, Ryan continues to love basketball and keeps trying harder.
“Ryan is one of the best players on our team,” Sky Park (8) said. “One, he is really fast. Two, his ball handling and shooting skills are really good. Recently, he got good at shooting. He is basically good at everything, and he is a real team player.”
Ryan has been playing for already a year and half. He is willing to look at his mistakes and fix them to become a better and stronger player. He hopes to improve the fluidity of his moves and his 1-on-1 skills.
“I consider myself a player who can improve,” Ryan said.
