Soomin Chun (8) always strives to do her best, both at school, and with extracurricular activities.
“I have high standards for myself because if I don’t meet them [my standards], I get very upset, so I get a lot of stress in trying to meet my standards.” Soomin said. “I feel like my friends have at least some expectations of me, and I also do have some of them too.”
Soomin has developed the ability to balance her workload for academic classes and may extracurricular activities. As a member of the North East Asian Mathematics Competition (N.E.A.M.C.), Soomin will represent Seoul International School’s middle school and 9th grader students at a competition in Shanghai, China. Due to the limited number of spots in the group, many students with mathematical talent have had to compete.
“The fact that Soomin is in N.E.A.M.C. means that she is one of the smartest people in our grade,” said Jenny Lee (8), close friend of Soomin. “Only 6 people got in, and this included the 9th graders and a lot of really smart people. I heard that the entrance test was really hard and challenging. This just proves that Soomin is a really hardworking and smart girl.”
According to Soomin, she initially tried out for the spot to challenge herself. Though Soomin did not expect to make the final cut, she will take this opportunity to improve her math abilities in a competitive environment.
“I tried out because I thought it would be fun,” Soomin said. “I had no idea that I would get in, and the fact that I did surprised me. We practice every Wednesday after school, and it is a really great environment to express myself intelligently. I am really looking forward to the competition in Shanghai, and can’t wait to compete against other schools.”
