Office hours are a new concept for the 8th graders as they enter high school. It is a period of time when students get to know their teachers and build relationships with them that they will be able to maintain for a long time. Some people disagree with the idea of office hours because they think that students will waste the given time. Some even argue that shortening the school day would be more beneficial than giving the students one “free” hour. However, when the concept of office hours are understood correctly, one can realize that it is very beneficial for the students; it gives the students a time to take a break and interact with their teachers.
Office hours are very important because students can ask a teacher to reteach a certain part that he or she was not able to understand. It also provides an opportunity for students to enjoy some time with the teachers and talk to them on one-on-one. Having a time allotted for office hours is a great way to remind students that school is more than letter grades: it is about social skills and the desire to learn as well. During office hours, highschool students will often come to the library to review and study material. Yet office hours are not a time to complete homework that was not finished at home or a time to go online to play games. Rather, it is a time to be used for preparing for tests with classmates, talk to peers, or ask teachers for clarifications on learning material. School is part of the preparation process for the society, and in the society, social relationships are very important. Students are usually busy after school with academies and homework, but with office hours, they gain some free time to talk to fellow classmates and teachers offline. It also provides students with some time to relax or prepare for an upcoming test. When used correctly, having office hours brings many benefits for students. In conclusion, office hours are a new concept for fellow rising 8th graders. On May 13, Dr. Valerio introduced 8th graders to the concept of office hours, and how to use the time wisely. Office hours are a time to talk to teachers and fellow classmates. As freedom comes with responsibility, office hours also come with some necessary regulations. In the long run, the rightful usage of office hours will benefit grades and personal relationships. |
