The past week has been a very special week for the middle school, as everyday was a distinct opportunity to show school spirit. Monday being pajama day, Tuesday twin day, Wacky Wednesday, Character Thursday, and Flannel Friday, students were told to show their support for MS Spirit Week hosted by the Middle School Student Council (MSSC).
The problem that that occurred this week was the lack of student participants. If what was told was even a little bit challenging, students would give little or no effort in dressing up. For instance, Wacky Wednesday showed the least amount of students dressed up, as what was supposed to be garish and eccentric day turned out to be a dull Wednesday morning. The series of events this week served as a piece of evidence to criticize the spirit that the school body holds. “A very few people participated, and I think that this solid evidence that our school really lacks school spirit and I think that we should work as a school to build up more spirit” Eugene Kim (8) said. Students here could probably care less. Out of the piles of homework, practicing instruments, memorizing scripts and vocabulary words, reading philosophy and making study guides, where could they fit in an ungraded, voluntary dress up game? The dilemma is clear, that the agenda is full and students are stressed over plenty of other things. Like so, it is genuinely understandable that students do not or can not plan out their outfits for spirit week. But does that justify the grim spirit that students reflect? It cannot be a petty excuse to set spirit aside and make other priorities. Simply, school spirit should be something that is prioritized because it can make up for an cooperative school environment that enhances engagement. “It was disappointing to see that little people had made an effort to dress up and actively engage in Spirit Week.” Yoon Lim (8) explained. Spirit Week showed a clear resolution for the lack of school spirit and no eagerness to participate in school events. Until, very few students would engage in school activities. As a marking point in this school’s history, the entire school should work towards achieving a greater standard for displaying support for each other. |
