The coach blows his bright red whistle, signaling for all his basketball players to surround him. Eager to listen to every word of their coach’s directions, all his students race up to him while dribbling their basketballs, in a matter of minutes. This is a common sight in all the MS girls’ basketball weekly practices. As it is now April, it is the time of the year when middle school girls basketball starts.
There is a great difference between the previous and current basketball seasons this year, as the teachers have drastically changed. Last year, there were three teachers, Mr. Munro (P.E. teacher), Mr. Koester (varsity girls’ basketball coach), and Ms. Julian (girls’ junior varsity basketball coach). However, this year, the coaches are Mr. Koester, Mr. Schwartz (junior varsity girls’ basketball coach), and many high schoolers from the girls’ varsity team. Despite these changes, the team has experienced a beneficial impact from the high schoolers. “Coaching MS girls’ basketball is a good chance for me to interact with my students in a non educational setting,” Mr. Schwartz said. “The high schoolers from the varsity team are really helpful. I especially like the fact that they can display their knowledge and pass it along to younger peers. The middle schoolers enjoy that because they can tend to look up to them.” Moreover, many drills have become more alike to those of which are done in high school, such as the 3:3 drills that helps improve on the players’ defense and offense. This is especially useful in preparing the eighth graders, who are willing participate in the high school basketball team, as they will get used to the drills. “Since most high schoolers are coaching us, I feel like it will be more beneficial to us because they have more experience of what it will be like in highschool,” Youngwoo Kim (8) said. “Because they know what the practices are going to be like, they can help us improve for next year. I also think the the drills are better than last year because they are more challenging. I am hoping these drills will help us improve our skills for next year.” |
