Model United Nations is one of the many clubs students are able to take in high school. MUN is a popular club that many students are willing to join. However, chairs are picky and strict about who gets in and who does not. Joining a club like MUN involves many responsibilities. In the long run, Model United Nations is a good learning experience.
MUN is a simulation of the United Nations for high school students. Each member, or delegate, represents a nation, and they are responsible for researching and presenting that country’s viewpoint on a certain topic or issue. Students who get into MUN enjoy it lots and say it’s a great learning experience. SIS junior, David Kim, was an MUN chair this year, and has been selected to be a chair again next year. David enjoys being in MUN because you can learn while having fun. He explains that heated debates during conferences are things that you will never get to experience in any other club in high school. “MUN is awesome because you get to go to amazing international trips. Last year, MUN went to the Netherlands and The Hague for almost a full week.” In order to be a successful member of MUN, there are some traits and responsibilities needed. Nagyon Kim, SIS junior explains, “In MUN, confidence is key. Without confidence, you won’t be able to persuade the other delegates.” It is also important to be very engaged, enthusiastic, and passionate about MUN, if you want to make the best of your time. Ryan Jang (9) states “if you are these three things [engaged, enthusiastic, and passionate] about MUN, it will be considered a hobby rather than a class.” Many students get confused between MUN and debate. How are the two different? Katherine Lim, SIS sophomore elucidates, “MUN is different from simply debating because you’re essentially a delegate of a certain country, and therefore you will have to be able to represent that country’s stance on a certain issue rather than your own opinions and ideas on an issue.” MUN is a club that many students are essentially wanting to join in high school. This club gives out incredible experiences and opportunities, so it is definitely worth taking a shot. Now, it’s your turn to face the challenge, and take your first steps into becoming a global leader! |
