At least twice a week, Grace Yang (8) fulfills a major responsibility. Grace is the section leader of the flutes in the 2013-2014 Middle School Coda Orchestra.According to Michael Ganus, middle school band teacher, she has been placed there due to her superior ability to play the instrument.
“As a section leader Grace is capable of reading all her parts and being extremely attentive during class,” said Kelly Oh (8), flute player in Coda Orchestra. “She is always responsible and a step ahead when it comes to advancement.”
In order to keep her position, Grace must undertake certain responsibilities, such as practicing beforehand to not make mistakes, leading the group and keeping everyone on track.
“As a friend who has played the flute for quite a long time, Grace is an extremely devoted player who always tries her best,” Kelly said. “She practices daily and makes up for her mistakes and flaws when needed.”
To ensure her ability to lead the group well, Grace spends most of her free time practing her flute..
"Practice makes perfect,” Grace said. “Thats why I practice at least 30 minutes a day if possible. I know that if I don’t practice, I can’t keep up.”
Like the delicate flute she plays, Grace has a timid and quiet personality. Unless someone is her very close friend, she is not chatty or loud.
“Grace usually doesn’t talk a lot to others,” said Timmy Kim (8), section leader of the clarinets in Coda Orchestra.“She focuses on her task and stays on track. Other times, she just whispers or talks quietly with other members in her section.”
Although Grace initially was not interested in playing the flute, she had decided to play the flute not because she had a strong passion for it, but because it matched her personality. She started playing the flute merely as a hobby, but hopes to continue her musical studies.
“Being able to play an instrument was something that helped me to simply find a leisure activity,” Grace said. “I wasn't particularly interested in arts or drama, but through my experience of starting flute and keeping on until now, I was able to find my certain interest in music. As well as it may seem to many others who play instruments, music is different than academics and thus helps me to relieve stress in certain points.”
