Layers: a New Way of Learning
Layers A, Layers B, and Layers C. This has been one of the most common continuous patterns for the 8th graders’ science projects throughout their whole year. The Layers is a science project for each particular topic (chemistry, genetics, reproduction), in which a study guide needs to be filled out, and assignments completed for each learning objective. Once a student finishes these tasks, the student is able have a conference to explain the concepts while showing a clear understanding to Ms Burns, the 8th grade science teacher. While Layers A and B are graded based on its display and clarity, Layer C is graded based on the completion of the required tasks.
“Layers is an interactive experience for students to learn about different concepts of science,” Joonyoung Lee (8) said. “The advantages of layers is how it requires the students to think more independently and outside of the box, rather than studying off of a generic textbook. The disadvantages raises from the fact that students may receive incorrect information at times or must research information they have not learned in class on their own. I believe it is better than written tests because I seem to remember science concepts more clearly and for a longer time.” According to a survey answered by many 8th graders, many students including Joonyoung Lee (8) preferred this project more than other kinds because they were able to remember the concepts even weeks after, as they completed various worksheets. However, depending on each individual and his or her personality traits, there were various opinions. “There has been great benefit in terms of students showing greater and deeper understanding and improving their ability to communicate their ideas,” Ms Burns said. “I love that I know my students so much better after doing a year of conferences, even though it can be exhausting. Next year, the conferences will focus more on Layer B assignments (explaining models). More of the Layer C assignments will be assessed by written exams with options for conferences. ” As a result, this project has been a benefit to the students as it was successful in increasing their oratory skills, knowledge on the concepts, and their ability to write concise main ideas. Many wish for this project to be assigned next year as well. |
