Even as an eighth grade student, David Yoo (8), a new student at SIS, enjoyed playing basketball with his friends. David was mostly inspired to start practicing basketball by watching American basketball games online.
Before he developed his passion for basketball, David used to enjoy playing soccer. Growing up in the states, it was a trend among his friends to practice playing basketball. By practicing basketball often, David first came to notice that this was his favorite sport. Ever since he started this sport, he noticed that he had potential, and had only a few aspects to improve on.
Even after moving to Korea in the summer of 2013, David continued to develop his basketball skills. He joined a basketball club named Bally Crossovers, that consists of eighth grade students Timothy Kim, Ryan Jang and Justin Lee. He was assigned the role of point guard, and has been responsible for leading the team’s offense by controlling the ball and passing to the right players at the right time. By practicing continuously, he has been able to hone his skills and is now one of the best 3 pointer shooters, according to his team members.
“I don’t think David doesn’t easily get hurt because he never goes rough on people to an extreme amount.” Justin said. “During games, he always seems to be spatially aware of his other team members, making sure that he does not injure others as well.
Through his active participation in basketball, David has been able to not only improve his athletic skills but also meet friends at school who share the same keen interest in basketball. According to his close friend Ryan, David helps the team members build up their bright spirits before games.
“David is always trying his best,” Ryan said. “It is definitely hard to defend him because he is always running around on the court, trying to get the ball. He especially has a great sportsmanship when playing basketball, always getting ready before the game with a positive mind.”
David is not only inspired by his other friends from the states, but also by Ray Allen, an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association(NBA). Although David often has difficulties managing his time due to his academic work load, he always makes time for basketball.
“Basketball involves a great amount of intensity.” David said. “It is a game that tests your determination and tests if you truly love it or not.”
