With one minute left on the clock, the Bally Crossover is tied with their opponent in its final quarter of the basketball game. Out of nowhere comes Timothy Kim (8), Bally Crossover player, whizzing around the other players. He shoots and scores!
In the most recent match, Timothy scored the winning goal for his team. His team members describe him as vital and dedicated player, and throughout his whole middle school experience, Timothy has played basketball everyday during recess as well as two times a week outside of school. Having started to get engaged in basketball when he was in 6th grade, Timothy, now, plays almost six hours of basketball every week.
“I first got inspired by Derrick Rose in 2010, during his Most Valuable Player (MVP) season,” Timothy said. “He plays for the Chicago Bulls which is the basketball team of my hometown. Watching Derrick Rose play in [the] NBA inspired me in different ways. Not giving up was one of them but basketball was another. Seeing the former MVP player inspired me to play basketball on my own. I love his style (when) playing, watching him pull a lot of acrobatic moves from his arsenal and score.”
Timothy and a few of his other friends who enjoy playing basketball have formed an afterschool basketball team called Bally Crossover. Timothy plays the center position in his basketball team. According to Timothy’s team members such as Sangwon Cha (8), Timothy is one of the best basketball players on the team.
“[Timothy] is tall, so it is easy for him to get rebounds and make jump shots,” Sangwon said. “He is also very cooperative and respectful to others which makes him a great team member.”
Timothy has encountered many obstacles while playing basketball. While playing basketball, Timothy hurt his finger, tore his knee muscles and sprained his ankle twice. As a result of his injuries, Timothy had to undergo six toe surgeries. To protect himself physically, Timothy also has to wear knee pads and ankle braces before practice to keep himself protected. Despite his injuries, he still aspires to be a great basketball player and eventually become a member of the boys varsity basketball team next year. Timothy considers basketball as an enormous part of his life, and he intends to compete and engage in this sport for the rest of his life.
“[To me] basketball isn’t only about improving and staying healthy,” Timothy said. “It taught me many different traits that I use in my every day life such as integrity and patience. I love that I can interact with other people, strategize and of course, win!”
