“On the right corner, we have undefeated, title defending champion, Floyd Mayweather! On the left, we have lightning fist and the pride of the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao! Let’s get ready to rumble!! Oh! Mayweather with the strong right jab, left jab, block, with the knockout by Pacquiao,”
This was what everybody was expecting from the so called “legendary match” or the “fight of the century” that took place at the MGM Grand hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Only friends, family members of the boxers, celebrities, and just a very limited amount of lucky fans were permitted into this great arena. “I wasn’t really expecting a knockout since these boxers are future hall of famers but it [the match] could’ve been better,” said grade eight math teacher Mark Dominguez. Others including a large range of students and staff seconded this claim. All major boxing critics stepped up to the ring and made an announcement saying that it wasn’t only the result that was extremely disappointing for the majority. The style and the boxing tactics used in the actual match were extremely amateurish and mediocre as well. The hopes for a match of “uppercuts and jabs” turned into and very frequently dubbed as now, the hugging match, being that Mayweather, very often in the match, started wrapping his arms around Pacquiao for self-defense. “I don’t think it was worth watching for the people that paid all that money just to watch Mayweather just running around and protecting the championship,” Jae Park (8) denounced after watching the whole match. This fight was even more infuriating for those superfans who actually attended the fight, as they poured so much time and money just to see a major disappointment. The base estimated revenue made from this match alone, just over $400 million dollars. Floyd Mayweather won a whopping $160 million from winning this fight. This boxing match, with the 21st century's most fierce and bloodthirsty boxers- Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao- was supposed to be the match of the century. However, the ending result of this match that was solely comprised off of incentive for money and a “clean” win, turned it into the disappointment of the century. |
