The white shuttlecock flies over the badminton net through the midst of the light blue sky, which is a sign that spring has just started. This year, badminton was announced as an official highschool sport played in SIS during the spring season. Even though it isn't considered a KAIAC or AISA sport yet, badminton has caught the attention of many HS students this year. Consisting of 16 players and Mrs. Lambie as their coach, the team practices two times each week after school.
Students who have joined badminton this year may not have had the experience of playing before. However, many certainly enjoy the difference it has with other sports. “I was surprised to find that badminton actually requires a lot of practice, stamina, reflexes, techniques, and experience.” Sooyoung Kim (10) said. Even though these athletes have no official competitions to participate in yet, they are still pressured. Not only do they have to challenge themselves, but they also have to compete with their teammates, as badminton is played up to only doubles. “Badminton, unlike other sports, is unique in that it is independent and relies on yourself to pull off a good game,” said Justin Kim (9). “The weakness that I face whenever I play badminton with other people is that I am weaker than other players. So when I clear the shuttlecock, a light cone shaped object, it doesn’t go as far as other players, which gives the opponent a better chance of winning. I want to improve this skill by the end of this season.” Players are hoping to start off the first year of badminton in SIS with enthusiasm and also wish that many more will join the following year. Although many students who are willing to try out the sport next year may not have much experience, it is more important for the player to have commitment. “Freshmen have just as many chances to make it to the team as seniors, and I think maybe sometimes even more so, because they’ve got four years ahead of them,” said Mrs. Lambie. “So come out, and try out for badminton!” |
