ASIS: Theatre tango
April 11th 2015 was a great day for theatre in Seoul International School. It was the day the Arts Society of International Students, also known as ASIS, was born. But what on Earth is ASIS? ASIS is a newly formed annual event that allows international students in Korea to meet and create a piece of theatre in under 36 hours.
Two students, boy and girl, from grade 8 to 12 were chosen to participate in the ASIS Festival. They had about 3 months to prepare for an introductory drama production that introduces their school. The SIS team created a play dedicated to our TIGERS value. Using this play, they were able to break some of the ice between the 7 schools. After that, students went to workshops, with each one dedicated to a separate profession (such as directing, acting, playwriting etc), students were able to pursue their field of interest while also being able to interact with others. “I think this was a very fulfilling experience, for all of us, to meet and work with others that we were not used to. Which inevitably made making new friends incredibly easy compared to other situations” said James Park (8). “I also thought that this was an excellent opportunity to know my ‘sunbaes’ with this event.” he continued. This proves that this event was successful in connecting international schools in ways other than sports. Although the number of students were limited this year, Mr. William expects to increase the number of students in the coming year, thereby hoping to increasing SIS’s influence in the drama field around South Korea. Students were able to make friends outside of school and be “out of their comfort zone” which were the goals of many teachers for the grade 8 Field Trip. “I believe this was a very successful event. I’m looking forward to the future face of drama in Korea,” said James, “After all, we won the very first drama award for SIS.” |
