A Year of hydration, and out
What would you do if your country ran out of water? California governor Jerry Brown has issued orders on California’s first mandatory water restriction in history. Brown first ordered the state through CBS News to cut current water use by 25%, showing the importance to conserve water. Governor Brown encouraged citizens and corporations to voluntarily cut their water use by 20% which the governor, Jerry Brown has stated, “It’s a different world, we have to act differently,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
In the past, California’s local agencies have ignored warnings multiple times to prepare an upcoming drought crisis by saving as much water they can. Now that California is in actual crisis, Brown made it clear that burden of fines will fall to local agencies each day whenever they failed to follow his orders. The Los Angeles Times reported that Southern California agencies and citizens are willing to remove almost 89 million square feet of turf. In addition, cities also implemented a more precise observation on their water-rate to conserve water use effectively. Grass, that are California’s major feature of visual representation were removed from soil to cut water use on gardening. Apart from removing grass, farms have been temporarily shut down in few areas across the state, creating bigger issues by having a lack of vegetables and fruits. This is becoming a problem because general statistics show that California produces most of the produce in the United States. "We're in a historic drought and that demands unprecedented action. We have to pull together and save water in every way we can," Brown stated at a news conference in Sierra Nevada mountains which he clearly expressed that the drought was a priority issue to fix in the state. California has never been in such a desperate predicament where the drought crisis could turn into something more severe like poverty. Immediate response to Brown’s order must be taken to prevent complete depletion of water in California. |
