GIN (Global Issues Network) is a club available in both middle and high school. It is open for all students interested in raising money to resolve ordeals that affects the community in and out of SIS.
People may have the misconception that HS GIN is the same as MS GIN, but that is not true. There are many differences between the two electives. “The main difference between high school and middle school is that we take the solutions to a higher level and we take it very seriously.” says Mrs. Anderson, the high school advisor for GIN. She made it very clear that GIN is a place for students who devote their time and have passion and perseverance to help others and find solutions. The HS club requires more commitment than the GIN elective available for middle school students. Though more work is involved, there are also many more opportunities for students to experience, such as traveling to foreign countries. Members of HS GIN have the chance to attend conferences dealing with global issues, and also take part in hands on activities to experience what is going on around the world. On their most recent trip to Chiang Mai, a city in Thailand, the members planted trees to help fight deforestation, and also built walls for a primary school to help support them. Though it is true that taking GIN in middle school will give a student more experience and preparation, it is not a requirement for students wanting to try out as a member of the club in high school. Just like any other club, applications are required to be submitted, and not all applicants get in. Especially in GIN, competition is fierce between freshmen to enter the club. “Just try your best, and show dedication. If you really wanna make a change in the world than I think you can go into GIN next year at school,” offers William Chung, a freshman in HS GIN, as words of advice to encourage his hoobaes who may want to join the club. Overall, GIN is a highly recommended choice for those interested in helping resolve global issues. If you think you want to participate in developing our community, and gain great experiences from the club, you may want to think about filling in an application to join this amazing club. |

The 30 Hour Famine was one of the events that GIN prepared to raise awareness about starvation in African countries. The event involved students “camping” overnight at school, and only being able to drink water for 30 hours. Photograph courtesy of SIS HS GIN
SIS HS GIN members frequently travel around the world to help people in need. This year, the club went to Chiang Mai, Thailand, where they planted trees and experienced the local culture. |
